AROUND CROW HAll
Reeth is a charming village located in the heart of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales.
Reeth lies about 11 miles west of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. If you are driving from Leyburn you will be taken across the Buttertubs Pass which takes in the most heavenly views across the dales which are simply breath-taking. The village itself is encased in the most beautiful sheep-scattered hills, making for the perfect base for walkers and cyclists.
In Reeth, there are plenty of tea shops to enjoy a real Yorkshire cup of tea and a slice of mouthwatering cake, a small local supermarket and not to be missed an ice-cream parlour. On Fridays you can buy local supplies from the village green market. In the village, you will also find the little Swaledale Folk Museum which conveys life in the Dales.
WALKING AND CYCLING
For walkers and cyclists this is the perfect base. Wonderful walks direct from the cottage make for breath-taking scenery, forever changing with the seasons. You can hire a bike from the Dales Bike Centre (also has an excellent café and delicious homemade cakes!) and for those on foot, there are plenty of marked walks around the Dales and along the picturesque rivers for all abilities.
The Swaledale Villages And Towns
Driving along Swaledale in a westerly direction from Reeth, you will pass through many traditional Dales villages and hamlets, each with their own unique character and particular highlights. The main villages to the west of Reeth are Gunnerside, Muker and Thwaite; and to the east, and within a pleasant stroll of the doorstep of Crow Hall is the village of Grinton.
The three market towns of Leyburn, Richmond and Hawes are within easy reach of Reeth. Each has a slightly different character - Leyburn being an elegant town offering spectacular views on the drive between Swaledale and Wenseydale; Richmond is known as the 'capital of Swaledale' and being dominated by its castle is full of history; Hawes is England's highest market town, best known for being the origin of Wensledale Cheese (a visit to the factory for cheese-tasting is a must!).
HORSE RIDING
Pony trekking is available at Wensleydale Equestrian, near Bainbridge where you will be able to experience the dales and beautiful scenery from horseback.
If you are holidaying with your horse, the excellent Arklemoor Riding Centre offers holiday livery, and is just a few minutes' drive from Crow Hall.
EATING AND DRINKING
There are three pubs each within a 5 minute walk from the cottage, each being located on the village green – for a pleasant stroll you may wish to walk to Grinton for its pub. There is plenty of choice just a stone’s throw away. No need to get behind the wheel!
If you do fancy a short drive, there are two gastro pubs each a short drive away which have really excellent food. You may even want to take the drive to Britain's highest pub. A little further afield in Wensleydale you will find the superb Wensleydale Heifer. The high-end restaurant is an absolute must for that special birthday, anniversary, or simply just to treat yourselves.
You will be spoilt for choice and each option offers something slightly different, but all provide an excellent welcome.
